Nephite Protectors of Converts

A certain contingent of Nephite defenders, distinguished by their compassion and sense of duty, rose in importance when the persecuted people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi sought refuge among them. After observing the depth of the converts’ repentance and their firm resolve never again to take up arms, the chief judge deferred their fate to the voice of the people (Alma 27:21). The response was both generous and resolute: these new believers would receive the land of Jershon as an inheritance, and Nephite armies would shield them from further Lamanite attacks (Alma 27:22–23). This accord reflected a spirit of unity as the Nephites embraced their brethren, creating a haven where the Anti-Nephi-Lehies could persevere in their renewed faith.

By stationing strong forces between Jershon and the land of Nephi, the Nephites ensured that the people of Anti-Nephi-Lehi would remain safe from enemy aggression (Alma 27:23). Although these converts offered to become servants to atone for the violence they had once inflicted, Nephite law forbade slavery; instead, the newcomers agreed to aid in sustaining the armies from their own substance (Alma 27:24). This compassionate solution unified the Nephites and the Anti-Nephi-Lehies in a shared commitment to protect one another and honor divine covenants. In doing so, these stalwart Nephite protectors of converts not only preserved precious lives but also nurtured a community bound by mercy, faith, and the determination to live righteously.
