Why is it important to read the Book of Mormon before trying to gain a testimony of its divinity?

Mormon expressed support and confidence in his son Moroni. President Gordon B. Hinckley emphasized the importance of such words, “In your associations one with another, build and strengthen one another. ‘No man is an island; no man stands alone.’ We so need help and encouragement and strength, one from another” (Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley, 45).
