The 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language defines sally as “to issue or rush out, as a body of troops from a fortified place to attack besiegers.” In the case of Alma 56:29, the Lamanites would send forth bodies of troops in attempts to prohibit the reinforcement of provisions and supplies by the Nephites.
What can we learn from this verse about avoiding temptation and sin? (56:40) Likewise, in the spiritual war that rages throughout the earth, Satan “maketh war with the saints of God, and encompasseth them round about” (D&C 76:29). How might obedience—turning neither to the left nor to the right—lead you away from temptation and becoming surrounded by the enemy?
